Art Nouveau & Art Deco

When I saw this artwork I immediately thought of Alphonse Mucha, the artist that painted so many beautiful women during the Art Nouveau period. But I couldn't find any connection. If anyone does, I would sure appreciate you letting me know! I've shown Our lady stitched on a mottled green background to simulate being in the forest. I've also shown her with a white background so you can see the details better. There is a lot of sheer stitching which makes this design quicker to stitch than you would expect. It also might show bits here and there of the underlying fabric. So keep this in mind when choosing your background.
I'm starting to do something different with this design. For years I have included a Thread Comparison chart made just for the design in the zip files. Since our thread will soon be gone forever, I am going to start making the conversion charts available before you purchase.

With summer coming and hopefully more opportunities to entertain our friends, I wanted to create something flexible that allows a lot of options. Coming in Small, Medium and Large, you can make placemats using only one size or as in my screen shot combine them together for more options. The napkin ring can also be used as a narrow border. These are stitched only on two layers of Organza - no other stabilizer. Stitch the designs on the top or sides of the placemat. Full instructions included.
These designs were done with Placemats in mind, but here are their Unique Qualities:
- Comes in Small, Medium and Large so you can use different sizes together or do the whole project in just one size
- Use only Organza as Stabilizer!!!! I used two layers.
- Just cut our the design without any finishing needed on the edges
- Zig Zag designs together or onto your project where needed with invisible thread.
- The napkin ring design can be stitched as a border.

There will be several Greek block kits. You can use just one kit in a quilt or get several to have more variety. There are two full size blocks, 2 border strips in two sizes, a corner design in two sizes and a straight motif in two sizes. Instructions included. I had planned to stitch a large block using the borders but my machine went on the blink! Loads of embroidery machine but no straight stitching machine working. LOL So I did a screen shot of what i had in mind. The coral and green plain strips would probably be some kind of print or a swirled type of print.

These are very quick stitching Quilt Blocks. I used Variegated thread for all of my samples, but they will look just as elegant with solid colors. Each design has the basting stitches required to do a QIH - Quilt in the hoop design. The white blocks shows how they will look with white fabric, white thread and batting. Instructions included.

When creating these designs I pictured towels and a picture in a bathroom with an ocean feel. The smaller designs could also be used as a border for curtains. I created some possible arrangements for the smaller designs and did a screen shot to give you some ideas.

Steampunk is often related to Art Deco – especially in Home Décor Items. If you want these blocks to be used with Steampunk, I would do them in more metallic or dark green or brown colors.
To use them as just Art Deco, use colors like the black and red, but also peach, green, blue lavender – just about any colors can be used.
Each design has basting stitches at the beginning in case you want to use Angelina or fabric as an applique. You can zig zag the satin stitch borders together or trim the blocks with a fabric border all around as I did in the sample. The instructions include how to make the sample type quilt.

I wanted to achieve a slightly old fashioned, antique look. I think the yellow fabric background and the Moss Green, pale orange and Ruby red give that look I was after. You can completely change the look of these designs with different colors of thread and fabric. See the screenshots shown before the freebie to the left.

You can have fun with these happy ladies! Stitch them as regular designs or use all kinds of fancy fabrics to make an appliqued skirt. I created these designs with clothing and table settings in mind. For clothing, the tall designs can be used along either side of the opening or placket; the medium size design can be pockets and the small design on a cuff or collar. For the table, use the tall design for the placemat, the medium design for coasters and the small flower on the napkins. Of course I’m sure you will come up with many other ideas!

I always go back to Art Nouveau. I love it's style with subtle colors, graceful lines and curves, and flora and fauna that's decorative with just a hint of reality. These designs can be used individually or grouped to create borders or large tapestries. I have included some ideas in the photos. Aphonse Mucha's gorgeous women have been reproduced in many mediums - paintings, prints, tile and stained glass. Fred captures a little of all these in his rendition of *Summer*. Summer was originally painted by Mucha in 1896.

You have a lot of options with this set! There is a small center circle with three rows of designs. You can make a complete *window* - A square with large circle inside. (It is a true square – I just hung it on point.) Or make a smaller circle (just the first row of designs) or just the larger circle (the second and third rows of designs). You can appliqué the outer row alone as the center of a tablecloth, perhaps with other designs in the center. The individual corner sections could then be appliquéd on the corners of the tablecloth. This set would also make a great quilt centerpiece. You could use the outer corners in the corner of the quilt. The designs can also be stitched on organza, batiste or voile to let the sun shine through.

To me Art Nouveau seeks the beauty in nature and Art Deco seeks the fun! These fun ladies and gents can be used alone or as couples. They would make great His and Her towels, pillows, aprons or shirts. Or use them as I did in the start of quilt. I'll be adding a wide harlequin border to complete the Art Deco look. The medium figures average 6.8 inches high, the large are 9 inches and the jumbo are 11 inches.

Some are rather realistic and some definitely stylized. You can use the embellishments to frame them or as accents between them. In addition to the projects shown, they would work well on clothing, linens or curtains. This set comes in a jumbo size where most birds are 11.25 inches high! The picture was made with the jumbo size. The quilt and fleece scarf used the medium sizes.

You have a lot of options on how you make your hobo bag. The Ivory bag below uses embroidery on all parts where the Blue Bag uses embroidery just on the front and a fantastic hand dyed fabric for the rest of the bag. You can choose as little or as much embroidery as you want. The instructions include directions for both versions of the bag in addition to patterns and templates. This bag comes in Small for the 4x4 hoop, Medium and Large. Both bags below are the Small size.
The small bag is 10.7" x 10.2", the medium bag is 14.7"x12.8" and the large is 17.4"x15".

Hot Fix crystals are all the rage and I have created these designs especially to be used with crystals. You will get instructions and images to follow to add your crystals. In addition there is a tutorial included, Ideas for Adding Hot Fix Crystals to your Designs. (This tutorial can also be downloaded below) This tutorial can be used with any designs.
These designs are perfect for purses and totes as shown below and also for garments. The black and white sample I've shown could be used for a blouse. I can picture a white blouse with a black shoulder section and the designs stitched as shown. I just changed the black to white for the lower design - you could match any colors this way with any of the designs. This design is reminiscent of an ornate, old fashioned wrought iron gate. The small size will stitch out 16 by 9.8 inches, the medium size is 20 by 12.5 inches and the large 24 by 15 inches. This set would make a great picture or try it on something like white curtains for a really unique look.

This is a companion set to Art Nouveau Quilt in the Hoop. The designs from both sets can be combined for larger projects. Or as you can see below, they work very well for small projects. By using a combination of embroidered squares and plain fabric squares you can quickly stitch up all kinds of projects. I've decided I like this style of quilting! These designs can be used to make all kinds of quilted projects: place mats, table mats and runners, lap robes, full size quilts, quilted boxes - the possibilities are endless. There are fully embroidered squares, some with just outline and embroidery and others that can be stitched on a sandwich of fabric and batting in one color without stabilizer to create quick border or sashing sections. Or use them alone with fancy fabric for a quick place mat. You get full instructions on how to complete the squares. All designs with their quilting and batting are completed in the hoop.The screen shot below the photos of my table mat give you an idea of how they could be used in a large quilt and also how they might look in different colors. I used water soluble stabilizer for stitching my embroidered squares so the finished project after washing is nice and soft. .

As you can probably tell I love Art Nouveau designs. Up until now I have mainly focused on the Art Nouveau floral and bird designs but the artists of this period also used a myriad of animals, insects and sea life. Their fauna fascinate me because though they are decorative art, they also have a very realistic look. And especially fascinating are the expressions they achieved with so few details. The characters almost have *attitude*! I think the octopus below definitely has attitude. :)
With summer approaching in much of the world, these designs would be perfect for decorating - linens, curtains, ourselves. They can be used individually of course, but I have also designed them with combinations in mind. The screen shot below shows a possible layout using all the designs. I used several metallic threads in stitching my samples. These designs really lend themselves to metallic thread as many have one sheer color stitching over another. There are many ways these squares can be combined to make a picture. You will receive instructions for different methods of creating your picture. Check the design sizes and you will see the border design included that you can use to stitch on top of the designs. Then you only have to zig zag the pieces together to create your picture! I have finished my wall hanging by stitching the pieces together, pressing the seam flat and then stitching the seams with satin stitch using copper thread. This was a very quick and easy way to finish the project.
The small set of designs will make a picture (without any borders added) 12"x16", the medium will be 15"x20" and the large, 17.5"x23".Though a different theme, this set will coordinate nicely with Stained Glass Fantasy I will be using many of the same colors and also some of the same foliage to tie the two embroideries together.

Art Nouveau is timeless and always stylish. These vases and companion designs would make wonderful linens and accent pieces for a kitchen or dining room. The companion designs could also be used for clothing such as scarves, the leg of a pair of jeans or any shirt or jacket.

Art Nouveau Medallions you can use as individual designs or put together to form borders. They are great accents for blouses, skirts, kitchen items, curtains - anywhere you need that *decorative* touch. Experiment with colors as the Art Nouveau period loved lots of color in their art work.

These designs can be used for quilts or smaller projects as the table mat I did below. I think one of the larger designs would look great on the back yoke of a black shirt with the border design perhaps on the cuff or a front pocket. I used metallic thread on most of these, but they will look equally well with a gold colored regular thread. Because Art Nouveau designs used so many colors, you can totally change the look of these designs by changing the colors. The solid gold design would be appropriate for displaying an initial on a quilt or alone on a set of towels.

I love the colors used in Art Nouveau designs. Looking at Art Nouveau designs you will find many done in colors other than we would expect for the subject. They use a lot of shades of colors and you might find a design with only 2 or 3 main colors, but many shades of those colors. They also use a lot of peach and lime - two of my favorite colors.
I think the peacock below shows how dramatically a design can change with different colors! Done in vibrant hues he would be perfect for embellishment with crystals or beads. The center column of designs in this set are created especially for a large border, though of course they can be used by themselves also. Art Deco is very much back in fashion and I created these designs with gift giving in mind. The silhouettes stitch up very quickly. The scarf below took me about 30 minutes to make. Just two pieces of fabric stitched together and hemmed and the design stitched on one side. You could also use the smaller design and put one on each end of the scarf in opposite colors. Other projects could be all kinds of handbags and purses, clothing and items like book covers and glass cases. The appeal ranges through all ages.

Art Nouveau is a style that can fit in any decor. I have stitched these samples in a very typical Art Nouveau color scheme, but you can choose any colors to get a totally different look. Pastel pink flowers and pale green leaves would look great in a bath or bedroom, or stitch the flowers in red with gold outlines to give a Holiday look. You receive the bowl with the option of 5 or 6 sides and two different doilies. The more decorated doily would look great as a mat by itself. These designs would make great accessories for the new Lace Bowl & Doilies - Art Nouveau.
