  • In the Chinese Zodiac 2022 is the year of the Tiger. Tigers, considered to be brave, cruel, forceful, and terrifying, are the symbol of power and lordliness in Chinese culture. In ancient times, people usually compared emperors or kings with the tigers.

  • In the Zhou Dynasty, (1046- 256 BC) 5 toed Dragons were reserved for the Emperor and 4 and 3 toed dragons were for the commoners. Later the Chinese decided that all dragons with fewer than 5 toes were in different countries and had lost toes in their travels. This Dragon would be very impressive on the back of a jacket or as the centerpiece for an oriental quilt. You receive full instructions to assemble the designs to make your dragon. All purchases will also receive a DST version that stitches the entire dragon in one hoop 8.1" x 11".

  • I created these designs from Chinese Indigo images. But as you can see they can be done in any color and are perfect for adding lots of Bling! Most have none or few jump stitches and work up quickly. They are perfect for clothing or summer linens. The vest shown is made from very soft fabric and I used Vilene - a water soluble stabilizer - to keep the drape of the fabric even though I added many designs.

  • triptych - A painting or carving that has three side-by-side parts, panels, or canvases.

The modernization of China took many different avenues. One was the wearing of British dress. Though industrialization lagged behind many other countries, it was slowly being emulated even in the traditional crafts like sewing.

Though I have made a screen from the designs, they are also appropriate for pictures - framed or made as a quilted wall hanging, or for quilts. You can add more lattice designs to make larger panels for either the screen or quilt. Stitch the lattice designs on patterned fabric and have even more options!

The screen below is made entirely from things in our sewing rooms except maybe the hinges. No wood or framing involved! You will receive instructions to make your own screen. I have used the medium size designs and my screen panels are 24" high x 12.5" wide. NOTE: The jumbo designs are sized for the 8x8 hoop.

  • These designs have no jumps for easy stitching and can be used individually or grouped as shown on the samples. I took these designs from ancient Chinese tapestries and textiles that were done in Indigo blue and white. The last three designs are much smaller than shown - it is best to click on *Check Sizes* below to see the dimensions of the various designs. There are enough variations in size that they will work well for garments using the larger designs on the body and the small ones on the sleeves or collar. Another use would be linens with the larger designs on a tablecloth and the small ones for the napkins.

You will receive actual size templates for the two arrangements I used.

This is broken down into the 5 elements of Feng Shui. Each represents many aspects of life and each has their own colors. The last 12 designs are the inner months of the Chinese Astrology and represent the months in the Chinese order starting with February.

  • Chinese Indigo designs were done in batik dating back to the Sui Dynasty (AD581-618). Though Batik is more generally associated with India and the Far and Middle East, it is thought that the art probably developed in China and spread through the other areas. Batik using Indigo cloth is still being done in the Guizhou Province. I have found examples of bed cloths, table cloths, clothing, personal items such as handbags – the designs are appropriate decoration for just about any project. And though white and Indigo are the traditional colors, they can of course be done in many different ways!

This set and QIH Quilt Blocks I are the Quilt in the Hoop versions of the designs in this series. You will get full instructions to make your quilt or other project!

There are 5 sets in this series .Quilt Blocks 1 and Quilt Blocks II are designed to maximize the size of your hoop. With the two sets you will have 24 different designs and enough variety for even a large quilt. You can also add the Centerpiece, Borders and Corners set to give even more options.

  •  The Chinese Dragon has 5 toes, unlike the Korean which has 4 and the Japanese which has three. The Chinese explain this as the dragon losing power as it moves away from it's origins. The dragon throughout Chinese history has represented water and weather. The horse, so entwined with the history of China, symbolizes power, strength and beauty. In this picture, two very powerful entities may be vying for top place as the most important symbol of Imperial power.

  • With just a few strokes of pen or brush the Chinese artists capture the sheer strength, beauty and motion of these magnificent animals. Though coming from an Oriental source, these horses don't need to remain in an oriental setting. They can blend in with many styles and themes. The black and gray designs below could be done in many colors - brown and beige, chestnut and black, even all white. And the colored designs can also be adapted to many different horse colors. On the pillow below I substituted a silver metallic thread for the gray and pale green of the ground. Though many of the paintings I found of horses didn't have much background, they often included just a sketchy patch of grass or a hills or trees in the background. I've included two of these designs so you can make a complete arrangement of your horses.

  • The Asian Phoenix, Fenghuang, is not the same Phoenix as that of the western world. Images of the Phoenix have appeared in Chinese art for over 7,000 years. The design below shows how he/she looked during some of the major dynasties. The Phoenix represented power sent from the heavens to the Empress and indicated the people where it was displayed were loyal and honest.

The oldest embroidery found in China was from the Shang dynasty. China was the first country to discover silk and it is believed this is what led to the creation of embroidery. During this period the most common stitches were chain and couched work.

Embroidery flourished in the Han dynasty and many stitches were added - some satin stitch, a split stitch and the knotted stitch (later called the *forbidden stitch*). Embroidery was interwoven with many aspects of life. Buddhists used embroidery as their favorite medium to portray Buddhist images.

The Tang dynasty saw the real emergence of the satin stitch which continues to be the most popular. It's different forms allow much shading and very intricate designs can be created.

The Song dynasty saw the merging of painting and embroidery. Embroiderers often carefully depicted paintings in their work. Materials were greatly improved.

During the Ming dynasty embroidery was shared by many classes of people and was no longer just for the upper classes. New materials became available that were more refined and allowed people to create more detail and finer embroidery. The use of gold thread became very popular.

These designs can be used in many ways: in combination with other oriental designs in any type of project or as accent designs to decorate clothing or linens. I think a wall hanging of them along with their dynasties would be avery interesting and historical project!
