The Elizabethan era spanned the years from 1558 to 1603. This was a lavish period for dress and hairstyles. Queen Elizabeth was said to have at least 1000 dresses alone. The lady with the veil was taken from a portrait of the Queen. Neck ruffs and wired collars (called rebatos) were popular. The hair was frizzed or curled. The significance of this period in the history of hats was this was the first time young married women were seen in public with their hair uncovered wearing only jeweled ornaments or net cauls. The other major development was the popularity of hats. They were made of felt and beaver and were extremely expensive. These designs are done with a minimum of jumps and those necessary for features are in most cases long to be easy to trim.
