  • Japan- The Land of the Rising Sun or more accurately where the Sun rises- austere and dignified- where very often what is not said or seen is just important as what is there. These designs work would well on the shoulder or back of shirts and even Jackets. They can add just enough color to brighten their surroundings.

  •  The famous Japanese Ukiyo-e artist Hokusai painted this Phoenix on the ceiling of the Ganshoin Temple when he was 86 years old! It is recommended that the best way to view the painting is by lying on the floor:)  The temple is surrounded by gardens – even a pond full of frogs. You can stitch your Phoenix two ways – with the black design areas fully stitched or as I did for the sample designs (shown  on white fabric).  Or eliminate the first color stop on each design and stitch on black fabric as I did for the wall hanging.  You save thousands of stitches!  A commercial size design is included with each set.

    Finished Picture Size: Medium - 12” wide x 11.3” high, Large - 14.1” wide x 13.2” high, Jumbo - 14.4” wide x 13.5” high. Commercial Size:  12” x 11.3”

  •  For each mini scene below you receive the main *character* as a separate design and several landscape designs to group around him or her. (To see the separate designs, please click on *Check Sizes* below) You will receive an actual size template to create the scenes as I did below or use your imagination! You can of course mix landscape designs among the different scenes. Taken from oriental paintings, many of these designs can also be used in non-oriental projects. Though appropriate for many projects from clothing to handbags, these designs are also perfect for large quilt blocks to mix with your oriental fabric stash. I have done this using the two Oriental Fauna sets. (I just don't have the borders of the quilt done yet) They also make interesting pictures.

  • I had two goals in mind for this series. One is to find geishas that are doing different activities than just the standard poses - like our Falconer Geisha below. The other is to have designs that can be used with them for many purposes. The vest below is one possibility, and of course they are perfect for a quilt. The allover designs can be used as blocks, or cut apart and appligued as I did on the vest. The motifs can be used as accent designs on any project.

NOTE: The vest is from a pattern by Safe-T Pockets Pattern Co.

You get three large designs split for a 5x7 hoop and full instructions to easily line up the sections of the designs. Plus there are three designs that will fit a 5x7 hoop without splitting. Some of the sections of the large designs can also be used by themselves for more options. In addition you get instructions and patterns to create the fabric background below. This finished picture is 36" wide x 32" tall. It would make a dramatic wall hanging or centerpiece for a quilt. The large design will also make nice pictures as shown below!

  •  The style of this Kimono design is taken from ancient Japanese Woodblocks. Whenever I think of Woodblock prints, I remember rubbing a pencil over a raised object under paper to create *tracings* as we called them. Though not technically correct for woodblock printing, I thought the name appropriate for these designs. I've created them especially for variegated and metallic threads. The backgrounds can be appliquéd or not as desired, and there is a free standing lace version to use for mobiles, gift tags and sun catchers. These designs will also stitch well on organza. There are instructions included.
These designs are a fun way to use up pretty scraps of fabric and fancy threads!

The designs with satin borders can be made freestanding if stitched on tulle or organza. The sachet below is stitched on tulle. You will receive instructions for the samples shown in the pictures. This set is very versatile. You can make items like I have below, or make medallions and stitch them on clothing or linens, make a sheer curtain using the border and scattering lace designs throughout or combine several of the designs for an allover lace effect. There are no jumps (except to the satin stitch border) so they stitch up quickly and easily.

  • I chose the designs for these postcards for their symbolism. (listed under each design) You could even incorporate their meaning in your message: e.g. *I send you this crane representing peace and long life to wish a very Happy Birthday* or *may the endurance of the elephant help you in your time of need*.

These cards are done a little differently than our other sets. They are designed to make it easier to make quilted postcards if you wish and give you more options on assembling them.

PLEASE NOTE: The greetings, Happy Birthday, etc. are in separate design files and are interchangeable or you can create your own. You can see these files by clicking on Check Sizes below. The instructions explain how to use them.

  • Japanese Panel - Summer is the first in a series of Japanese Panels.  There are two versions - one with fully embroidered backgrounds that you stitch together similar to a Stained Glass set. The other version is individual designs you can stitch on one piece of fabric. I painted some white silk to make my sample below. You will receive an idea file that explains different methods for constructing the designs and specific instructions for creating the samples shown.

When I found the artwork for these designs I of course wanted to know what the characters mean. I asked for help on my group and a delightful lady, Deb, offered to help. Her Mother lives with her and is Japanese. Her Mother recognized *Summer* and *Persimmons* in the writing. Not being satisfied, they wrote to their family in Japan for help. Deb's cousin, his son and a young lady that teaches Japanese at a local university all replied. It seems the characters are very ancient and only a few have survived to current usage. The panel below is a combination of four calligraphy styles: Shousho, Kaisho, Gyousho and Kana. So though I still do not have a full translation, I know that it is a poem about summer and persimmons and that it is from a very ancient painting and of course we have the beauty the original artist portrayed.

  • Japanese Crests, or Ka-mon, were first used around A.D. 603 on military flags and banners. By the 700's, Ka-mon became very popular but were only allowed to be used by the imperial family, lords and samurai. They became specific to a family and the crest could often be used to trace lineage. By the Meiji Revolution in 1868, Ka-mon were used by everyone, even the common folk. There are over 12,000 Ka-mon presently in use. They are not used as prevalently now as in the past, but can still be seen on ceremonial dress.
These designs can be used as regular designs or as bordered or Quilt in the Hoop designs. You receive full instructions how to use the variations of these designs.

  • It's hard to think of Japan without thinking of dolls. Fred has named these Miniatures because so many Japanese dolls go way beyond our idea of a doll. Between the expressions on their faces and the beautiful detail on their robes, these designs would be perfect to include in any oriental project - a quilt, a wall hanging, a table cover. I can also see them around the border of a black linen jacket for spring or on white silk dresser scarf for that special bureau.

  •  I've always loved the Chinese embroidered pictures so I decided to create my own. You will receive an actual size template (you can see it if you scroll down this page) and instructions on how to put these designs together. They can also be used to create many other scenes, either alone or combined with other oriental designs. I plan on framing mine with a black matting and a gold frame. It would also make a great pillow or quilt center. The medium size is 17.5 inches across when finished and the large is 21 inches.

  • These designs can be used in conjunction with many of our other Oriental design sets. Placed behind a geisha they can set the mood for a real conversation piece. By themselves they could be used to make a tranquil picture or set of pillows for that special spot in your home.

  •  These bonsai would make the perfect complement to any of your oriental designs as well as showpieces in themselves. They could be added to totes, scarves, jackets, quilts or just framed as is. In nice frames they would make a very impressive grouping on your wall.

  • IThis is the last in the current Geisha Series of designs. Japanese, in fact any oriental, embroidery fascinates me and I have often duplicated many of their stitches in hand embroidery projects. My goal with this set is to incorporate as many of the hand embroidery techniques used in Japanese embroidery as machine embroidery will allow me to. The first design, the Wisteria, demonstrates the use of understatement, outlining and the use of straight stitches to give detail (the tree branch). The second floral bouquet uses a very often used *woven* stitch for the cattails. The third design uses couching, perhaps one of the most prevalent stitches used. Many of their embroideries are row upon row of couched metallic threads - gorgeous! The fourth design imitates the use of satin stitches for shading. Using ever lighter or darker shades, they lay layer upon layer of uneven satin stitches creating a very satiny surface and much depth to the embroidery. The remaining designs also use these techniques. The last three designs in the set are smaller medallions to use as accents or with some of the larger designs. You could also use them as a border - either repeating just one design or alternating them.

  • There will be six dragons in all. I hope to have this set complete sometime next week. The dragons are part of the Geisha Series of design sets. I have researched a lot of Japanese dragon embroideries and the majority of designs seem to be done in 4 colors: Gold, Black, Red and white. The other predominate characteristic is that many of them have the stylized *water* motif with them. I am attempting to capture these elements in this set of designs. Of course, the dragons can be stitched in many color schemes. As I was creating them, I was picturing them in emerald greens or vibrant blues and turquoise.

  •  These ladies are one of the Gesiha Series of designs. I've included one color versions of these designs as I know many of you use the Oriental designs for quilts and I thought there would make nice in between blocks for a quilt. They could also be stitched in gold for a real Oriental look.

  • The process of Japanese Wood block printing involved many skills. There was first the artist who must be skilled in creating artwork specifically appropriate to be printed, then the carvers who often spent 10 years learning the craft and finally the printers who could properly align the blocks and apply ink to paper. Started in Japan as single color printing in the 8th century, it took nearly 900 years before color prints were produced. Prints often involved 15 or more carved blocks. All of the designs in this set will be taken from actual Japanese Wood block prints. The next two will be actors in very colorful costumes. Actors and the stage were a very popular subject for woodblock printing.

PLEASE NOTE: In order to maintain the integrity of these designs, the 4x4 versions will be different than those shown below. You can see them by clicking on Check Size - US - Metric

  • BFC0288 Lace Bowl and Doily Lotus Flowers
    • 60% off

Lotus flowers bring the Orient to mind. Done with a black border as illustrated this bowl and doily set would be at home in any Oriental setting. But experiment with all white borders and pastel flowers and the look will be totally different and can be used in any decor. The Doily can be used as a placemat with matching stemware skirt and napkin ring. I have used metallic gold thread to highlight the flowers and leaves but this would look equally well with a coordinating gold color thread. You will receive full instructions to create the Bowl, Doily, Stemware skirt and napkin ring. The companion designs are Oriental Flowers

  • Very often a background color can determine the success of design. Different colors can be used to accentuate, highlight, or even detract from design shapes and ideas. Sometimes a particular color can even suggest a design idea. I have created certain designs that I feel work well with black. I encourage you to experiment and explore not only background colors for the designs you purchase or create, but thread colors as well because it is in these choices that freedom and excitement can be found.

  • Much of Oriental Art is about balance. Fred has chosen the symbols for Thankfulness and Gratitude along with the circle to represent this balance. In Fred's words, "A simple gesture of recognition, that often goes unnoticed, liberates and opens the conscious to receptivity. It allows the circle to complete its course and begin again." This bowl has a totally different construction as you can see. It is quite easy to put together and you get full instructions complete with pictures. This unique bowl opens up a lot of possibilities for types of bowls. There are also many possible uses for the designs in this bowl. The circular designs would make great appliqués for a jacket or bag. Or several could be stitched and then tacked together to make a mat or table runner. The plain circles can be used to add other designs for a one of a kind doily. The top bowl in the photos is the medium size and the green and gold is the small size bowl done with gold metallic thread. Different colors can totally change the look of these bowls and doilies, as you can see from the samples shown with the designs.

  • Art Nouveau is a fantastic Art Form and Oriental themes were often chosen. I have stitched out the sample designs in a very *Art Nouveau* color scheme - Light and Dark Green, Cream and Salmon Red with Accents in Gold Metallic. But you can change the look of these designs totally with different colors. I've included a few samples at the bottom of this page.

I also thought these designs would make a great *fabric bowl* and you can see my first attempt at a fabric bowl to the left and below.

14 designs each in 3 sizes (SML) (see below)

You will see some sample stitch outs done in different colors. You can see how different the effects are!

I think the Red, Black and White Cranes would look great on a white shirt. The White, Black and Gold Crane would be perfect for a black jacket. And how about a row of Blue and Purple cranes along the bottom of a towel or curtain? The fish become much more masculine when done in vibrant greens.
