  • These designs are based on the Granite carvings in the The Old Mutual Building in South Africa. They represent nine ethnic African groups (not just South African) labelled thus: "Xosa", "Pedi", "Maasai", "Matabele", "Basuto", "Barotse", "Kikuyu", "Zulu", and "Bushman".  I can see a fantastic quilt made with all of these designs.

  • These Etchings are in The Old Mutual Building (now turned residential) in Cape Town, South Africa. Attributed to Ivan Mitford-Barberton, they depict indigenous animals and plants. As you can see they adorn the elevator doors which are edged with black marble. They would make an elegant wall hanging edged in black and white fabrics. Or use them for a tote or handbag!

  • Our majestic Crane joins our other large birds. You will receive full instructions and templates to easily create the background and finish the wall hanging. Or make your own design! I think he would also make quite a statement stitched on the back of a black jacket. Or if you have a narrow spot, stitch him onto a wall hanging! In addition to the individual designs shown below you will receive the Crane split and sequenced into two designs for large hoops.
The Crane by himself is 18.2 inches high by 6.6 inches wide. The picture without the sashing is 20 inches high by 16 inches wide.

  • I have always loved these cranes, but wasn't sure where they were from until I started looking last week. I found they are indigenous to Southern Africa and especially South Africa, mainly in the wetlands area. (hence the wetlands design to use as a background for your cranes) So I read a little more and discovered all the gorgeous flowers that grow in South Africa. So many to choose from! One site alone listed over 2000 species. I chose the King Protea because it is the National Flower of South Africa and the Disa Uniflora because we all love orchids, and of course many of us are familiar here with the *African Daisy* (Barberton Daisy). You will also receive a split version of the tall crane so you can make him large as I did on the vest.

These designs are appropriate for clothing. You will receive instructions on how I made the pockets on the vest below and also templates to create the arrangement on the back. They can also be used for pictures, pillows or the centerpiece of a quilt.
PLEASE NOTE: For those with large hoops be sure to read the *check sizes* below to see the Commercial sizes.
