Orchids

Even though they come in so many varieties, you can always recognize an orchid. Their grace and beauty add elegance to any project.
We would like to thank Susan and David from New Zealand for allowing Fred to use photos of David's prize winning orchids for some of these designs.9 Designs each in 3 sizes MLJ Check Sizes

I've searched for a long time to find another painting by Martin Johnson Heade that is in the public domain so I could do a companion to our first Hummingbird and Orchid window. The hummingbirds in this painting look like they are a pair and live among bright pink Orchids in this adaptation of a painting by Martin Johnson Heade. (Pre-Raphaelite period) He painted during the late 1800's and was known for his lush floral paintings especially of the flowers of Brazil and hummingbirds. You receive instructions for several different ways to assemble this picture and also satin stitch borders you can use after stitching the design so you can just zig zag them together to finish. This set is for the lower window in the picture below.
Please click on check sizes below to see the stitch counts and sizes of these designs. Be sure your machine can stitch the number of stitches and colors- especially if you are looking at the small size.
The medium size, shown below is 12x20 inches, the small is 8x12 and the large 14x24 inches without borders.

These designs can be used as singles or combined in all kinds of ways. I show a few possible combinations below. these designs coordinate with QIH Orchid Jungle Handbag. Since orchids come in so many colors, you can easily change the look by changing the colors of the flowers.

The inspiration for this bag came from our Humming Bird and Orchids Window. You will receive full instructions with pictures and patterns you can print to complete the bag and lining. There are instructions for the cord strap I used below and also a more traditional fabric strap. I also describe a way to stitch this bag together that greatly minimizes the *fuzzies* problem with many Quilt in the Hoop designs even with fabric like the silk I used for my sample.
The medium bag (shown below) is 13.6" high x 15" wide and the large is 16" high x 17.8 wide.

The hummingbird surveys his realm filled with lush tropical plants and fiery orchids in this adaptation of a painting by Martin Johnson Heade. I've added some velvet leaves around the silk and velvet frame for interest. There is a companion set to this window, Window - the Hummingbirds and the Orchid.

Orchids seem the perfect addition to our Watercolor Series. I drew most of these flowers from photographs I had taken at a flower show several years ago. It almost seems the variety and color of orchids are infinite and it was hard to choose!
