TUTORIAL – TROUBLE SHOOTING METALLIC THREAD
If you've never tried metallic thread here are some tips.
- Always start with a design that just has a small section you will use metallic thread for. If you have, or can make one, choose a one color design that is just a block or a few lines and a small solid area.
- First try the metallic thread without changing any settings from your regular ones but change to a new needle, the size you usually use. If the thread breaks often or causes other problems, continue reading.
- Record how many stitches get stitched before making any changes.
- For the next try, change the needle to either a metallic needle or a 90/14. Record the number of stitches before any breaks.
- If you still have breakage, try loosening your tension just a little. If it breaks, try choosing a slightly tighter tension - I've found this often works well on my machines.
- Use a thread net on your spool. If possible, use a thread holder that you can place far away from the machine. Sometimes you can even place the cone on the floor and run it through a thread holder on the table next to the machine. The idea is to let the thread have plenty of room to twirl around without kinking.
- Slow down your machine! I have run our metallic as high as 800 spm (stitches per minute) using my regular 75/11 needle. But I was testing so I don't recommend that! I would suggest dropping 50 spm at a time and test in between. You want to find the best combination of speed and running well.
