Japanese Crests, or Ka-mon, were first used around A.D. 603 on military flags and banners. By the 700's, Ka-mon became very popular but were only allowed to be used by the imperial family, lords and samurai. They became specific to a family and the crest could often be used to trace lineage. By the Meiji Revolution in 1868, Ka-mon were used by everyone, even the common folk. There are over 12,000 Ka-mon presently in use. They are not used as prevalently now as in the past, but can still be seen on ceremonial dress. These designs can be used as regular designs or as bordered or Quilt in the Hoop designs.
