BFC1434 Endangered Species Series - Sumatran Elephant
The Sumatran Elephant, native to the Indonesian Island of Sumatra was declared Critically Endangered in 2011 when its population declined by 80% in 3 generations. There are approximately 2400 to 2800 individuals outside of captivity. The reasons for their decline are mostly loss of habitat and poaching. The Sumatran is the smallest of Asian Elephants (from 6.6’ to 10.5’ at the shoulder) and can be either gray or brown. In addition they can be distinguished by the largest head bump of the elephants. Females can reproduce up to 60 years of age, which is the average lifespan. They have smaller or no tusks where the males have the normal large tusks. I have included the same design for the elephants in both the gray and brown coloring. I originally designed this with quilt blocks in mind. They are designed for a 10” square for the medium size, 12” square for the large and 14” square for the Jumbo. You will find templates in with your ColorCharts for these arrangements. You can also make your own arrangements or only use some of the background designs as I did for the Tote Bag (instructions for the tote included).
