Silk is a wonderful fabric - probably my favorite of all.  It can be strong, heavy, light as a whisper - any texture you want.  It is also easy to care for.  Many kinds can be washed, all can easily be wiped off in most cases.  I especially like the Dupioni silk because of its texture and often iridescent qualities.  It embroiders beautifully!  It is decorative without taking away from the embroidery.  I love to embroider a design on it and then applique that to a shirt - a strip down the front, a pocket, even a large circle or triangle for a large embroidery on the back!  These Fat Quarters are all 18 inches x at least 18 inches wide.  But many are way wider because of the width of the fabric.   We cut the FQ's by cutting an 18 inch high strip  (more like 20 ") and then folding that in half and cutting it.  We don't trim to 18 x 18.  We also leave any uneven borders so we don't remove more silk than we need to.  You  can always find uses for silk pieces! 

I have also made complete lap quilts with silk and also used it for a lot of handbags.  And of course crazy quilts! 

These Fat Quarters are all made from Dupioni silk.  But there are a lot of variations in Dupioni:  Soome have very large slubs through out where others are extremely fine slubs.  These FQ's are made from both kinds.
